MEFTAL SPAS AND DRESS SYNDROME
In recent news, there has been a concerning revelation about Meftal, a commonly used non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) in India. The Indian Pharmacopoeia Commission (IPC) issued a drug safety alert on December 7, warning about the potential dangers associated with Meftal Spas, specifically its constituent, mefenamic acid. This alert was prompted by the discovery that mefenamic acid can trigger Drug Reaction with Eosinophilia and Systemic Symptoms (DRESS) syndrome, a severe allergic reaction.
DRESS SYNDROME
DRESS syndrome is a severe allergic reaction caused by certain medications and can lead to a range of symptoms. These symptoms may include skin rash, fever, abnormalities in blood tests, internal organ involvement, and lymphadenopathy. What’s particularly alarming is that these symptoms may manifest two to eight weeks after taking the drug.
MEFTAL-SPAS USE
Meftal Spas, the medication in question, is commonly prescribed for various conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, dysmenorrhoea, mild to moderate pain, inflammation, fever, and dental pain. Given its widespread use, the IPC emphasizes the importance of vigilance among healthcare professionals and patients for signs of DRESS syndrome and other adverse drug reactions.
SIDE EFFECTS OF MEFTAL SPAS
Aside from DRESS syndrome, Meftal Spas has been associated with various other side effects, including abdominal pain, indigestion, dry mouth, blurred vision, increased blood pressure, swelling, skin rash, and gastrointestinal issues such as stomach ulcers and bleeding. Prolonged use of the drug may also pose risks to fertility in women, kidney problems, and cardiovascular events, especially in individuals with pre-existing heart conditions.
PRECAUTIONS
It’s crucial to adopt a cautious approach when using Meftal Spas or any medication. Dr. Sonali Gupta, a medical professional, highlights the importance of treating the cause rather than merely alleviating symptoms. While some pain during menstruation is normal due to the release of prostaglandins, Dr. Gupta emphasizes that this pain should be mild and manageable with rest and hot fomentation.
If menstrual cramps are severe and require frequent medication, it may indicate an underlying issue such as fibroids, endometriosis, or a nutritional deficiency. In such cases, seeking medical advice is essential.
Still taking Meftal Spas??
1. Do not take it on an empty stomach. Taking the medication with food can help reduce the risk of adverse effects on the stomach.
2. Ensure you’re well hydrated. Staying hydrated is crucial when using medications, as it can help prevent potential side effects.
3. Only take it as prescribed. It’s essential to follow the prescribed dosage and not exceed the recommended limits. Taking more than one or two tablets a day can lead to complications.
4. Do not take it with alcohol. Combining Meftal Spas with alcohol can increase the risk of adverse reactions and other complications.
5. Do not take it with other painkillers. Using multiple painkillers simultaneously can have detrimental effects on health and may exacerbate side effects.
6. Discontinue use if you notice symptoms of allergic reactions. If any signs of allergic reactions, such as skin rash or swelling, occur, it’s crucial to stop taking the medication and seek medical attention promptly.
