Ajmer 92: Prior to its premiere this year, Pushpendra Singh’s film Ajmer 92 has already generated controversy. The movie “Ajmer 92” will be released in July 2023 and is based on the horrifying gangrape case that occurred in the city more than 30 years ago. It illuminates the darker incidents and the extortion of grieving girls by strong men in Ajmer, Rajasthan, in 1992. The suicides of several young women who had been sexually assaulted are depicted in the movie, which caused widespread alarm and hysteria.

‘Ajmer 92’: The Real Story

Ajmer 92: What was 1992 Ajmer gangrape case?

The scandalous string of incidents—including rapes and blackmail—that took place in Ajmer in 1992 are the inspiration for the movie “Ajmer 92,” which was made public thanks to a story in the Hindi daily “Dainik Navjyoti.” The accounts that are currently accessible state that Farooq and Nafis Chishti, members of the powerful Khadim family in charge of running the Ajmer Dargah, were in charge of a group of young men engaged in the atrocious deeds. At a remote farmhouse or cottage, they would gang-rape young ladies and use blackmail to get what they wanted.

According to reports, local authorities were informed of the incidents up to a year in advance but decided not to pursue any legal action. According to investigations, Farooq Chishti made friends with a young girl at Sophia Senior Secondary School in Ajmer and then took advantage of her by taking explicit images of her. She was forced to introduce him to her classmates by him. There were about 250 victims, ages 11 to 20, according to “Dainik Navjyoti.”

Young men headed by the Chistis kidnapped the girls in the farmhouse, where they were later captured on camera in lewd poses. After then, the offenders used the images to threaten and intimidate the victims, keeping them from making complaints. The police were forced to intervene after the story eventually surfaced and images were published.

18 repeat offenders were accused in court in September 1992. The first eight defendants to stand trial were apparently given life sentences, however the Rajasthan High Court later cleared four of them in 2001. Farooq Chishti was also found guilty in 2007 by a fast-track court in Ajmer, but was discharged on time served by the High Court in 2013.

The recently released teaser showcases how rape victims were blackmailed by powerful people in the town and why many of them committed suicide. The film stars Manoj Joshi, Karan Verma, Rajesh Sharma, Zarina Wahab, Brijendra Kala, and Shalini Kapoor in important roles. Written by Suraj Pal Rajak, Pushpendra Singh, and Gyanendra Pratap Singh, the film attracted controversies as many Islamic organisations including Jamiat Ulama-e-Hind called for its ban.

The High Court rejects the plea to ban the movie.

A petition to prohibit the movie was just dismissed by the Rajasthan High Court. Anjuman Moinia Fakhria Chishtiya, an Ajmer-based organisation, has petitioned the High Court seeking a ban on the movie and the creation of a committee chaired by a former High Court judge to review the film’s content before it was released.
The petitioner asserted that the movie is an intentional smear campaign against the khadims and the Ajmer Dargah. Additionally, the group said in the petition that the movie’s trailer features obscene vocabulary. It claimed that the entire Chisti community has been unfairly portrayed in the film and unfairly connected to the aforementioned incident.

‘Ajmer 92’ is scheduled to release in cinemas on July 21.
