ETERNAL REST OF BHAGWAN BIRSA MUNDA
Birsa Munda’s journey took a tragic turn when he was arrested on February 3, 1900, at Jamkopai forest in Chakradharpur. The Deputy Commissioner of Ranchi reported that 460 tribals were accused in 15 different criminal cases, leading to convictions of 63 individuals. Among them, one was sentenced to death, 39 to transportation for life, and 23 to imprisonment for terms up to fourteen years. Tragically, six deaths, including that of BirsaMunda, occurred during the trials while they were in prison.
Birsa Munda’s demise on June 9, 1900, in jail marked a significant loss. Following his death, the momentum of the movement began to fade. However, his efforts were not in vain. In 1908, the colonial government introduced the Chotanagpur Tenancy Act (CNT), which aimed to safeguard tribal land by prohibiting its transfer to non-tribals. This act stood as a testament to the lasting impact of Birsa Munda’s struggle for the rights of indigenous peoples.
