Greet Wilders has managed to shock the world with their recent victory in the Netherlands. Europe is said to be a place where Democracy is at its peak new thoughts are born, liberalism grows there and no place for extremism. But this doesn’t seem the case for now at least after the recent elections in the Netherlands.
Greet Wilders is known to be a far right-wing person and an open criticizer of Islam and yet he managed to win the Netherlands elections and soon will become the next PM which is quite the opposite case for Europe. This is going to be the biggest upset in the history of Dutch elections since World War 2.
According to the NOS exit polls, Wilder’s party (Party of Freedom) has managed to win 35 seats in the 150-seat lower house. The exit polls in Europe are not like India in European exit polls the result is the same as the election commission result. The seats he won are more than double from the last time. Last time his party was only able to win 17 seats.
This win is so huge for him that he himself stated after the victory that “I had to pinch my hand” and after that, he added, “The Dutch voter has spoken. The voter has said, ‘We are fed up’.” He also said that he wanted to return the Netherlands to the Dutch.
History of Greet Wilders
Greet Wilders was born in 1963 and has been active in politics since 1988. He is also the founder of his own party “Party of Freedom” which is the third-largest party in the Netherlands.
He is also known to be a “Dutch Trump” mostly because of his looks his blond hair his firebrand rhetoric and also for his right-wing mindset.
But before founding his own party he was a member of the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD). He left the party because the party was not speaking against the illegal immigration of Muslims in the country.
In 2004 he formed the Party for Freedom (PVV) and the core agenda of this party was illegal immigration. Just after founding the party, he became the target of many extremists and has been under tight police protection.
In 2020, a court found him guilty of insult charges for comments he made about Moroccan immigration but he got out without any punishment as judges just let him go.
On 8th June 2022, he tweeted in support of Nupur Sharma. But this wasn’t taken as seriously because no one thought that he would manage to become the PM.
How Greet Wilders Win?
Greet Wilders was never taken seriously as a candidate for PM. The main reason for the Wider’s success is that the present leading party candidate was not that confident in their agendas.
On the other Wilders used more pragmatic lines and also made some changes in his controversial policies, he also looked confident in the final election debates with his rivals. This type of debate didn’t happen in India BTW.
Greet Wilders’s Promises to People
He proposed a binding referendum on leaving the European Union just like the UK did in 2020 however this doesn’t mean the Netherlands will leave the EU immediately there are a lot of things to be taken care of before happening this.
Immigration was of course on the list he said that “The Netherlands has been seriously weakened due to ongoing asylum tsunami and mass immigration”. But as an interesting fact, his mother was herself a half-Indonesian.
He has pledged to stop sending aid to Ukraine remove the country from international climate obligations and ban the Quran and mosques.
