Jack Dorsey’s allegations: ‘Will Modi govt answer?’

A political controversy has been sparked by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey’s assertion that the platform received “many requests” from the Indian government to block accounts covering farmers’ protests and those critical of the government. The Opposition Congress is demanding clarification from the Centre and accusing it of “murder of democracy.”

Jack Dorsey’s claims trigger BJP-Congress face-off

Supriya Shrinate, the head of the Congress’ social media, stated to reporters at a press conference on Monday that “the manipulation of social media platforms or media at large is what ails India’s democracy. The mother of democracy is witnessing a murder of democracy in the open, and the coercion of the populace is what weakens the democracy.

Jack Dorsey also said that the platform was threatened with “a shutdown” and raids at its employees’ homes in the country.

Jack Dorsey’s allegations: ‘Will Modi govt answer?’

The assertions of Jack Dorsey have already been debunked by the authorities. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Union Minister of State for Electronics and Technology, said: “This is an outright lie by Jack Dorsey…perhaps an attempt to brush out that very dubious period of Twitter’s history.”

The government’s response, according to the Congress, was as predicted. “I didn’t anticipate any further statements from the government. There is no alternative line of defence besides claiming Dorsey is lying. What does he stand to gain if he tells the truth, lies, or neither? However, the government stands to gain greatly by lying, according to Shrinate.

She recalled that in May 2021 “when the farmers’ agitation was at its peak…the BJP fake news factory and multiple leaders had tweeted…about an alleged toolkit which was tagged as manipulated media and Twitter was then raided on May 24… It happened because the idea was to suppress the farmers’ agitation. The idea was to send out a message that anybody standing with the farmers or showing their movement would be suppressed like this.”

Jack Dorsey’s allegations: ‘Will Modi govt answer?’

“During the protests in January 2021, there was a lot of misinformation and even reports of genocide which were definitely fake. GoI was obligated to remove misinformation from the platform because it had the potential to further inflame the situation based on fake news,” he wrote in his tweet.

No one from Twitter was sent to jail, and the platform was not shut down, stated Chandrasekhar.

He also accused Jack Dorsey of arbitrary and discriminatory conduct as well as misuse of power on its platform.

This is an outright lie by Jack Dorsey: Rajeev Chandrashekhar

Ridiculing the claims, Union Minister for Information and Technology Rajeev Chandrashekhar claimed Twitter under Jack Dorsey and his team were engaged in repeated violations of Indian law from 2020 to 2022 and it was not until June 2022 that they finally abided by law.

Taking to Twitter, the Union Minister posted: “This is an outright lie by Jack, perhaps an attempt to brush out that very dubious period of Twitter’s history.” The minister said that India as a sovereign nation state has the right to make sure all companies comply with Indian laws.
