Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) are a particular kind of digital certificate that are issued by authorised Certifying Authorities (CAs) in India in accordance with the Information Technology Act, 2000 and the associated rules and regulations. It serves as the nation’s accepted legal form of digital signature.

DSCs are generally used to safeguard online transactions, store electronic records, and guarantee the reliability of digital data. The Controller of Certifying Authorities (CCA), the regulatory agency in charge of issuing licences to and supervising CAs in India, is in charge of its administration.

What is Digital Signature Certificate?

The corporate affairs ministry’s DSC FAQs state that Class 2 DSCs are required to check a person’s information against a reliable, previously confirmed database, whereas Class 3 DSCs require a person to appear in person before a Registration Authority (RA) to demonstrate his or her identification. Class 1 DSCs just check the person’s name and email address. However, other publications state that Class 2 DSCs were stopped in 2021. A DSC with a validity of one or two years may be issued by the certifying authority.

DSCs are widely used in a wide range of applications, including the electronic filing of income tax returns, the Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns and other related transactions, the digital signature of documents during the incorporation of companies, the submission of electronic bids and participation in online tendering processes, the use of online banking, and other financial activities.

Here’s how to apply for digital signature certificate (DSC) online:

What is Digital Signature Certificate?

  • Visit any of the licensed certifying authority’s websites. The list is available at http://www.cca.gov.in/licensed_ca.html.&nbsp
  • Look for the Digital Certification Services section and select the one applicable for ‘organisation’
  • Download the registration form and fill out details including Class of DSC as Class 3, applicant name and contact, address, GST details, identity and address proof, and declaration and sign the document.
  • A demand draft (DD) or cheque will be required in the name of the local certifying authority
  • Send the application along with the cheque or DD to the authority. DSC is issued in around five days
  • The cost for DSC varies from around Rs 300 to Rs 2,000 with different certifying authorities and based on the validity period of one year and two years
