The Kolkata Bangkok Highway, a major infrastructure project aimed at enhancing connectivity between India and Thailand, is likely to open to the public within the next four years. The ambitious project, which will span multiple countries, holds the potential to revolutionize transportation and trade in the region. With significant progress already made, the highway is expected to facilitate seamless travel and economic growth across nations.

Kolkata Bangkok Highway: Commerce ministers from a number of nations and provinces in the Bay of Bengal region recently expressed their optimism that the trilateral highway connecting Bangkok and Kolkata, part of the Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) project, could be finished within the next three to four years during a business conclave organized by the Indian Chamber of Commerce and the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).Kolkata Bangkok Highway to start operation by 2027.

Kolkata Bangkok Highway: According to the proposed project design for the trilateral highway, it will start in Bangkok and travel via Thailand’s Sukhothai and Mae Sot as well as Myanmar’s Yangon, Mandalay, Kalewa, and Tamu before arriving in India. The highway is anticipated to travel through Moreh, Kohima, Guwahati, Srirampur, Siliguri, and ultimately Kolkata once it reaches India. The highway will have a total length of slightly over 2,800 km, with Thailand having the smallest section and India having the longest.
Vijavat Isarabhakdi, vice minister of foreign affairs for Thailand, acknowledged that the Thai section of the motorway is already finished. The Myanmar minister of commerce, Aung Naing Oo, said that the segment will likely be completed in three years.

It has been reported that the huge trilateral highway will start from Bangkok and covers the cities like Sukhothai, Thailand’s Mae Sot, Mandalay, Yangon, Kalewa, and Tamu in Myanmar. As far as Indian cities are concerned, it will pass through Kohima, Moreh, Srirampur, Guwahati, Kolkata, and Siliguri. It will cover a total distance of somewhere around 2,800 to 2,820 km. Reports also suggested that highways will feature its longest stretch in India. While the short one will fall in Thailand.Kolkata Bangkok Highway to start operation by 2027.

Kolkata Bangkok Highway: The conclave’s present Commerce and Industries Minister, Shashi Panja, expressed excitement for the road connection and emphasized the advantages it will bring to connectivity and trade in the area.

The trilateral highway will considerably improve trade and transit possibilities between Thailand, Myanmar, and India once it is finished. As a crucial link, it will make it easier for people and commodities to travel around, promoting more economic cooperation and growth within the BIMSTEC region.
