Before the start of the World Cup, the football tournament organized as part of the Summer Olympics was the most prestigious. But in the 1920s the sport faced a transition to a level of professionalism incompatible with the Olympic spirit. Therefore, the governing body FIFA planned to organize a World Cup. The decision to organize the first edition was officially announced on May 26, 1928.
