The purchase of Predator drones from the United States has been authorised by the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), which is chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The Cabinet Committee on Security will conduct a procedure and then approve the proposal.
In the US war on terror, Predator drones produced by General Atomics have been quite effective in battling terrorist organisations like the Taliban and ISIS. The MQ-9B SeaGuardian drones are the ones that are specifically being discussed for this transaction. These precision strike missile-equipped high-altitude, long-endurance drones can precisely target and eliminate hostile threats. The drones will be used for long-range surveillance operations along India’s maritime and border regions.

The Biden administration was reportedly pressuring the Indian government to approve the contract before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s arrival, according to reports that surfaced the previous day.
According to reports, India would spend over $3 billion on the purchase of 18 predator drones.
15 drones would reportedly be allotted for surveillance operations within the Indian Navy’s specified area as the deal’s principal beneficiary.
Under the auspices of the US Department of Defense’s Foreign Military Sales (FMS) programme, an agreement to purchase two MQ-9B Predator drone models from the US was being negotiated.
The talks began after the Narendra Modi government expressed its interest to procure the weaponized unmanned aerial vehicles for all three services – Army, Navy, and Air Force at the ‘US-India 2+2 Talks’ dialogue that took place in Washington DC in April 2022.
The Indian Navy has leased two MQ-9B unarmed drones since November 2020 for surveillance.
