Protesting wrestlers tarnishing India’s Image: PT Usha

The Protesting wrestlers said they would not leave the protest site until Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh was arrested. wrestler Bajrang Punia said Thursday that protesters did not expect such a harsh reaction from Indian Olympic Association (IOA) President PT Usha, who said grapplers were taking to the streets to protest after allegations of sexual harassment had been raised by the Presidents of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI).

The IOA and the government managed to placate the wrestlers by ensuring they would investigate their allegations against Sharan and the wrestling federation after protests first began in January. 

The Protesting wrestlers reiterated their protest, demanding that the case against the BJP MP be registered based on their police complaint and then arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) because one of the complainants is a minor, for an FIR against Sharan over allegations of sexual harassment.

Chief Advocate Kapil Sibal cited a request before the Supreme Court of India (CJI) Bench Dhananjaya Y Chandrachud and Justice PS Narasimha for an urgent hearing, arguing that the police must register the case because it was sexual harassment. The Supreme Court has classified the allegations of sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh as “serious” and issued a notice to the Delhi Police. 

CJI said: “The petition contains serious allegations at the request of wrestlers representing India regarding sexual harassment. Release Notice, Return Friday. Former wrestler Babita Phogat, who was included on the panel investigating the allegations, said her colleague Radhika Sreeman did not allow her to read the report in detail and has some reservations about it.
