Recently, the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Damodardas Modi, conveyed his wishes to the people of Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh on its 36th Statehood Day which is 20 Feb (1987) through tweets.

The President will address the special session on Tuesday of the Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly at Itaganar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh on statehood day.

statehoodIt is well known that several northeast States were part of Assam during British rule and continues as its part till 1972, before the formation of Mizoram as a union territory.

In 1986, after the 53rd constitutional amendment, the government had been authorized to form the state of Mizoram on 20 February 1987, as India’s 23rd state.

The name of Mizoram is self-defined, Mizo means inhabitants and Ram means land in the Mizo language. It means Mizoram signifies the “Land of Mizos”.

Geography

It is the southernmost landlocked state, sharing borders with three of the Seven Sister States, namely Tripura, Assam, and Manipur, and international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.

It is the fifth smallest state of India with 21,087 km².

It is a land of rolling hills, valleys, rivers, and lakes. 21 major mountain ranges run within an area of the state. Phawngpui Tlang also known as the Blue Mountain, situated in the southeastern part of the state, is the highest peak in Mizoram at 2,210 meters.

76% of the area is covered by forests, 8% is by land, 3% is barren land and is uncultivable area. The slash-and-burn cultivation technique also called Jhum is still practiced in the state.

The biggest river in Mizoram is Chhimtuipui, also known as Kaladan which originates from china and passes through the Saiha and Lawngtlai districts in the southern part of Mizoram. The most important rivers are the Tlawng, Tut, Tuirial, and Tuivawl rivers which flow through the north part and gradually join the Barak River in Cachar District.

The largest lake in Mizoram is Palak lake which covers an area about the area of 30 hectares.

Culture

Since the last 100 years, the cultural structure of the state has a vast change and changed tremendously.

Arunachal Pradesh

 

It shares its boundary with two states among seven sisters, those are Assam and Nagaland, and an international boundary with Myanmar, Bhutan & disputed border with China in the north at the McMahon Line.

Till 1947, Himachal Pradesh was called North East Frontier Agency (NEFA) and was one of the political divisions in British rule and later the Republic of India until 20 January 1972 when it became the union territory of Arunachal Pradesh. The largest state in North East as per the area.

It has an old history of about 500 BCE & the region came under the control of the Monpa kingdom of Monyul. Kalika puran , ramayan, Mahabharata mentioned name of Arunachal Pradesh.

The NEFA was renamed Arunachal Pradesh by Bibhabasu Das Shastri, the Chief Commissioner of Arunachal Pradesh on 20 January 1972, and it became a union territory. Arunachal Pradesh was considered a state on 20 February 1987.

Geographical status

There are several mountain ranges in Arunachal Pradesh most of which are part of the Himalayan mountain range. The highest peak in the state is Kangto, at 7,060 meters height from sea level.

The extreme East mountain is considered the place where the sun rises.

The villages of Dong and Vijaynagar receive the first sunlight among all Indians.

Major rivers include the Kameng, Subansiri, Siang (Brahmaputra), Dibang, Lohit, and Noa Dihing rivers.
