Nepal Plane Accident of January 15th, 2023: A Detailed Look at the Tragic Incident
On January 15th, 2023, a passenger plane carrying 72 people crashed shortly after taking off from Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, Nepal. He also called an emergency meeting of the cabinet regarding Nepal Plane Accident. Cabinet ministers of the government were present in the emergency meeting chaired by Prime Minister Prachanda.

According to the information, the ATR-72 aircraft of Yeti Airlines had flown from Kathmandu to Pokhara. There were 68 passengers and four crew members, ie a total of 72 people in this 72 seater aircraft. The plane had reached near Pokhara that it crashed just 10 seconds before landing. According to Nepali media, the accident happened between Pokhara’s old domestic airport and Pokhara International Airport.
Government declared one day national mourning for Nepal Plane Accident
The Government of Nepal has announced a day of national mourning after the cabinet meeting. After the cabinet meeting, the Government of Nepal has declared a day of national mourning on January 16 due to the plane crash. The government has also constituted a five-member committee to investigate the Nepal Plane Accident.
On the news of the accident, along with the airport and airlines, all the agencies came into alert mode. Along with the Nepali Army, the rescue team was immediately dispatched to the spot. Fire brigade vehicles have also been sent on the spot. For a long time after the accident, a cloud of smoke was seen rising from the spot. The rescue team has recovered 68 bodies so far.
Prime Minister Prachanda himself had announced to go to Pokhara to supervise the rescue operation, but the helicopter which went to review the security returned midway due to bad weather. After this PM Prachanda’s visit to Pokhara has been cancelled.
5 Indians were also aboard the plane while Nepal Plane Accident
Along with 53 citizens, there were five Indians, four from Russia, one from Ireland, two from Korea, one each from Argentina and France. This information has been given by the Airport Authority of Nepal. It is being told that 6 children are also included in the total 68 passengers. Yeti Airlines has also issued a list of all the passengers on board.
Not the weather, technical fault is the reason for the accident
It has been said by the Airport Authority of Nepal that the Nepal Plane Accident was not due to weather but due to technical fault. It has also been said by the Airport Authority that the pilot of the aircraft had taken permission from the ATC for landing. Pokhara ATC was also told OK for landing. The Civil Aviation Authority says that flames were seen in the plane just before landing, so it cannot be said that the accident happened due to bad weather.Another important thing has come to light that the plane caught fire in the air itself and after that the plane crashed.
The Pokhara International Airport at which it was to land was inaugurated 14 days in advance.
As soon as the information about the incident came, Nepal’s Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ called an emergency cabinet meeting to express his grief. Along with this, he directed all the agencies of the Government of Nepal to conduct effective rescue operations. He has also reached Tribhuvan airport to inquire about the accident.
Nepal Army, Armed Police, Nepal Police as well as local citizens are engaged in the rescue operation. So far 68 bodies have been recovered during the rescue operation.
